Careers in Management Information Systems
The K-State MIS program is designed to produce graduates who are business application developers, especially in team project settings. Organizations recognize the need for analysts and developers that understand both business and technology, particularly in functional areas such as marketing, accounting, finance, human resources, supply chain management, and general management.
MIS Pathways
There are two main paths to take in MIS: Information Systems and Data Analytics.
Information Systems (IS) involve the use of technology, people, and processes to collect, manage, and distribute data across an organization. These systems support business operations, decision-making, and strategic planning by integrating hardware, software, and databases. IS helps streamline workflows, improve efficiency, and ensure that accurate information is accessible when and where it’s needed.
Data Analytics is the process of examining, interpreting, and visualizing data to uncover trends, patterns, and insights that inform decision-making. It involves techniques such as statistical analysis, predictive modeling, and data mining. By turning raw data into actionable knowledge, data analytics helps organizations improve performance, solve problems, and make evidence-based decisions.
